The southern Japanese city of Nagasaki on Saturday marked 80 years since the U.S. atomic attack that killed tens of thousands and left survivors who hope their harrowing memories can help make their hometown the last place on Earth to be hit by a nuclear bomb.

NAGASAKI, Aug 9 (Reuters) - Thousands bowed their heads in prayer in Nagasaki on Saturday to mark the 80th anniversary of the city's atomic bombing, as the mayor warned that current global conflicts could push the world again into nuclear war.

Nagasaki commemorated the 80th anniversary of the US atomic attack with twin cathedral bells ringing in unison in Nagasaki for the first time in 80 years. The atomic bomb dropped by the United States on Nagasaki on 9 August 1945 claimed approximately 70,000 lives.
