Animated Star Trek has taken many forms over the decades, ranging from experimental shorts to full series, each offering a very different take on the franchise.

Starfleet Academy contains many references to different Star Trek shows, and the franchise's latest entry makes an underrated series more important.

While Star Trek has managed to keep a consistent level of quality overall, some TV seasons were widely disliked by critics and fans.

Its influence can be seen in storytelling, character dynamics and even the optimism that defines much of modern sci-fi. Star Trek isn’t just a show but a blueprint. But as television evolved, sci-fi tales with bigger budgets, sharper writing and a creative vision that is willing to take risks emerged on the small screen.
