The Cleveland Guardians might have little to play for in 2025, but rookie starting pitcher Parker Messick's first major league start offered a promising glimpse into their future.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. led off the ninth inning with a tying homer, Adrian Del Castillo had a broken-bat RBI single in the 10th and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Cleveland Guardians 3-2 on Wednesday.

Hernández, 28, appeared in five games for Cleveland after he was signed at the trade deadline following his release by the Tigers. The Guardians were Hernández’s third big league team this season after stints with the Phillies and Detroit.

Now, Cleveland’s No. 12 prospect ( according to MLB Pipeline) is set to make his MLB debut today in the series finale vs. the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field. Messick joins the starting rotation in place of Joey Cantillo, who was optioned to Triple-A Columbus on Sunday.
