The California State Assembly has passed Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom’s redistricting plan, a day after Republicans in the Texas House passed new maps of their own.

The measure is a response to the dozens of children who died at Camp Mystic and other youth camps in the Texas Hill Country during the July 4 flood.

It's been nearly two months since floodwaters tore through the Texas Hill Country, leaving more than 130 people dead.
