This Day in History: United States Naval Academy is founded

The U.S. Naval Academy was founded as the Naval School on October 10, 1845, by Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft in Annapolis, Maryland. This land-based institution at Fort Severn replaced the inadequate on-the-job training of the past, providing a formal, standardized education for midshipmen.
