A dog “knowing” a behavior means knowing your full expectations when asked to do it. For me, “sit” means put your butt on the ground and wait for me to release you. Of course, the difficulty of this needs to be taught and trained. I wouldn’t expect a brand new dog being trained to perform this well but it can quickly be achieved with the right training.
