Michigan conservation officers use patrol boats for commercial fish patrol, to make river runs and do search-and-rescue operations. Earlier this year, a conservation officer received a call about a stranded kayaker who overturned on Lake Erie. Within 20 minutes, the conservation officer retrieved his patrol boat, drove to a nearby boat ramp, launched his vessel and rescued the kayaker. Here’s a quick look at the basic marine training conservation officers receive. Learn more at Michigan.gov/Cons

We caught up with longtime ocean advocate and Oceana board member Ted Danson to dig into the Why’s and How’s of ocean conservation: why it matters, and how we get people to care. He put it perfectly—our oceans can be saved. The solutions are out there, but only if we treat them like the priority they are. 🐟 | Bloomberg Philanthropies

Riding ORVs is a ton of fun, but for DNR conservation officers it’s also part of the job. Often, off-road vehicles are the only way to reach a remote area where a person may be lost or hurt. Conservation officers receive specialized training to be there when needed! Interested in becoming a conservation officer? We are now accepting applications for the next recruit school – scheduled to begin July 2020. Go to Michigan.gov/ConservationOfficers for more information. | Michigan Department of Natur

The new standards help protect fragile habitats from harmful practices. Our next goal is to protect the beautiful seamounts, or underwater mountains, off the coast of B.C. Add your name to the growing movement for the permanent protection of this crucial habitat. Become a Wavemaker today. | Oceana Canada
