Two hours from Anchorage the Little Susitna River provides quality coho salmon fishing in the Alaskan wilderness. To hook into these hard fighting salmon we hopped aboard with Fishtale River Guides to sample the Mat-Su Valley fishery. See how we did in this episode of Pautzke Outdoors. | Pautzke Bait Company

Alaska’s Susitna River was named one of America’s Most Endangered Rivers in 2025. This 300-mile river supports abundant salmon runs and supplies #cleanwater for native communities. However, a proposed industrial access road threatens its health. We’re proud to support the Susitna River Coalition, American Rivers, and Defend the West Su in protecting this vital river. 🔗 Learn more in our medium piece: https://moorecharitable.medium.com/the-susitna-river-among-american-rivers-2025-endangered-rive

The Susitna River Coalition (SRC) works to protect Alaska’s 312-mile-long, free-flowing Susitna River, a lifeline for salmon, wildlife, and the Matanuska-Susitna community. As the proposed West Susitna Access Road threatens this vital ecosystem, SRC empowers local residents with the tools needed to safeguard their waters, ensuring the river remains the heart of a healthy, resilient community. The Defend the West Su also works to oppose the industrial access road, protecting intact landscape and

🚨 M6.0 Earthquake – Matanuska Susitna Borough, Alaska 🚨 A magnitude 6.0 quake struck on November 27, 2025, at 8:11 a.m. local time, centered about 38 miles northwest of Anchorage. The depth was measured near 80 kilometers, which allowed the shaking to spread across a wide area. Instruments picked up a sharp initial jolt followed by several seconds of rolling motion linked to movement along the deeper section of the Alaska subduction zone. Agencies are reviewing updated readings and monitoring

Alaska’s Susitna River is one of the most pristine rivers in the United States and supports the fastest-growing population in the state of Alaska. A proposed 100-mile road over the Susitna River would have severe impacts on clean water, cultural resources, fish migration, local economies, and the natural landscape of this remarkable region. The Susitna River Bridge on the Denali Highway, milepost 79.5, is a narrow wood-plank surface bridge built in 1956 to connect the Parks Highway with the Richardson Highway. The 1,039 ft long structure, which is about as long as eight commercial airplanes lined up, combines two different bridge styles: a single-span Pratt truss, which is the taller portion under the right side of the picture, and a multi-span deck truss, on the left. A bridge with multiple types of structures like this is rare, w

September means Susitna Watershed lakes become airports for wings headed thousands of miles away. Pacific loons (seen here), ducks, and other migratory birds linger on the glassy surface, topping off fat reserves before the push to coastal wintering grounds. Each calm morning carries the shuffle of migration with birds gathering, feeding, and waiting for the right wind to launch south. For a few fleeting weeks, our quiet water holds an entire departure lounge. | Susitna River Coalition

Observing the Talkeetna, Susitna and Chulitna Rivers for the past 20 years has been fascinating. The flow of the main current has changed so much from the Trapper Creek side to the Talkeetna side and who really knows how much bank erosion will occur until it changes substantially again. Here is footage from September 29th, 2017. Wednesday, October 22nd, 2025, 6 pm, I’ll be sharing slides and stories of documenting changes in the landscape in a talk, “Aerial Photography and Airplane Ownership: Ho

The American dipper is the only truly aquatic songbird in North America and a year-round resident in the Susitna watershed. You’ll find them where cold, clear water moves fast: bobbing on streamside rocks, disappearing underwater to forage, then popping back up as if gravity and current are optional. Their presence is a good sign. Dippers rely on healthy, connected streams with reliable flow and abundant aquatic insects. In winter, when much of the watershed is locked in ice, dippers persist in

The Little Susitna River is one of my favorites in Alaska. From Hatcher Pass, a meca for outdoor activity, down to the flatlands of the Mat-Su valley, the Lil' Su drops at about 100 ft per mile for 5 miles. At the common low flow of the river, it's a steep and technical boulder garden. But, when snow is melting at its peak or rains in the Talkeetna Mountains bring high flows to the river, it's an action packed, fluffy and continuous section to paddle. - Todd Wells | Dagger Kayaks
